Training academy to tackle UK renewables installer shortage

Segen Ltd. is set to launch the Segen Academy, a cutting-edge training centre designed specifically to meet the critical demand for skilled installers in the renewables sector.

Segen Academy

Opening on November 6, 2024, the Medway-based academy aims to equip a new generation of installers and upskill current professionals, providing the knowledge and practical experience needed to thrive in a fast-evolving market.

With the capacity to train around 1,600 installers each year, the Segen Academy will be an essential resource for the solar PV, battery energy storage system (BESS), heat pump, and electric vehicle (EV) sectors.

The Academy will welcome apprentices and electricians looking to move into renewables, as well as experienced teams from existing renewables companies aiming to sharpen their skills and stay ahead in a rapidly growing industry.

James Galloway, global product director at Segen, commented: “To achieve the national target of 70GW of solar deployment by 2035, the UK will require at least three times more qualified tradespeople.

“As the leading renewables distributor in the country, we recognise our unique responsibility to tackle this skills gap head-on. With the launch of the Segen Academy, we are committed to driving change in the renewable energy sector and equipping the next generation of installers for a sustainable future.”

Comprehensive curriculum for technical and business skills

The curriculum at Segen Academy, developed through research and industry feedback, will cover installation, commissioning, and maintenance best practices across solar PV, BESS, heat pump, and EV charging technologies.

Key industry guidance, including input from MCS and the New City Trade Skills College, has informed course design. Trainees will benefit from LCL-accredited courses and essential training like the City & Guilds 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382-22), required for domestic electrical work.

Beyond technical skills, the Academy will also offer training in finance, sales, and strategies for growing renewables businesses. This well-rounded curriculum aims to equip trainees with the tools they need for success within the industry.

Supporting career pathways into renewables

Training at Segen Academy is open to existing Segen customers as well as companies and individuals who open a new account. Segen is further committed to reimbursing up to 100% of training costs, supporting apprentices and electricians to transition into the renewables sector.

Liz Cammack, VP sales at Segen, highlighted the broader impact: “By providing a clear pathway to help more people become qualified renewables installers and by enabling existing installers to continually improve their skills and knowledge, Segen is poised to make a significant contribution to the industry.

“This initiative will not only create vital employment opportunities but will also play an important role in achieving national climate targets.”
