Statera Energy acquires one of the UK’s largest battery energy storage sites

Statera Energy has acquired a Greater Manchester-based 680MW/1360 MWh battery energy storage system site from Carlton Power.

Carrington Storage is expected to become one of the largest of its kind in Europe once fully energised in 2026. At 680MW, it will be over twice the size of Statera’s forthcoming 300MW Thurrock Storage, and will equate to nearly a quarter of the installed energy capacity of the UK operational BESS fleet.

Located close to Carrington Substation and with a grid connection in 2026, the site will have the ability to deliver instantaneous power to up to 2.2 million homes.

The scheme has already been approved by Trafford Council and is Statera’s largest consented BESS project to date. It will operate alongside long-duration energy storage and other flexible technologies to store excess renewable energy until it is needed, balancing the peaks and troughs of renewable generation.

In balancing supply and demand, Carrington Storage will help achieve the Government’s target to decarbonise the electricity grid by 2030.

Statera Energy was founded in 2016 with the aim of helping the UK make the transformational shift to a renewables-led energy system by providing flexible storage solutions that help to balance energy supply.

It has over 1GW of UK projects operational or in construction, and as of this announcement today has a consented BESS pipeline of 1370MW. With £700 million invested to date and up to £7 billion planned by 2030, it is strengthening UK energy security and supporting the low-carbon transition.
