How addressing the obstacles to EV uptake will impact installers

The uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK continues to grow despite emerging challenges.

As of early 2025, there are approximately 2.5 million plug-in vehicles in the UK, with over 1.7 million fully electric cars and 800,000 plug-in hybrids. This marks a substantial increase compared to 2020, when EVs accounted for only 1.3% of all cars, now reaching about 9% of the UK’s total car stock.

While fleet adoption remains strong, private consumer uptake has slowed due to concerns over energy prices, infrastructure and costs. We consider the solutions to these challenges and highlight the key drivers of ongoing growth.
