The college has worked closely with Speakman Contractors and LED Electrical to create a solar wall at its Princess Way campus. Ten solar panels, donated and fitted by the two companies, allow the college’s gatehouse to be energy sufficient, with its heating system and electrical equipment being powered purely by renewable technologies. The Feed-in Tariff from this solar wall will be used to provide one Advanced Level Construction student each year with a bursary of around £600.
Keiron Higginson, sales and marketing director at LED Electrical, said: “The solar wall is something that will benefit the college and its students for many years to come, providing a valuable bursary for students in the construction division through the 25 year Feed-in Tariff. We were delighted to be involved in this project and look forward to working with the college on many more green energy developments in the future.”
Chris Speakman, director at Speakman Contractors, added: “A number of our electrical installation apprentices have benefitted from the state-of-the-art renewable energy training facility at the college so we were keen to be involved in this project. The solar wall gives students the opportunity to see renewable technologies in action and will hopefully inspire students to study degrees in this growing area at university through the bursary scheme.”
John Shaw, head of construction at Burnley College, said: “Speakman Contractors and LED Electrical have been fantastic supporters of our ambitions to become the area’s leading green energy training provider and we would like to thank them for their involvement in this project.
“As a college we are committed to sustainable practices that support the environment and embed this philosophy into our own business operations as well as the courses we teach.
“We are a National Skills Academy for Environmental Technologies accredited training provider and have established relationships with organisations leading the way in renewable technologies such as Speakman Contractors and LED Electrical and Worcester Bosch. These partnerships allow our students and local businesses to work with the latest technologies and develop the skills which are needed to help homes and businesses embrace the new developments in renewable powered energy sources.
“The installation of the solar wall, along with our Worcester Bosch training facility, helps students to learn surrounded by the latest technologies and develop the skills of the future.”
