Trump follows through on wind pledge

US billionaire Donald Trump has appeared at a Scottish parliamentary committee examining whether the country can meet ambitious targets to generate all its electricity from renewables by 2020.

A long time opponent of large scale offshore developments, he used the opportunity, as expected, to blast wind as financially ‘suicidal’ and heavily criticise plans to site 11 large turbines near to his £750m golf course in Aberdeenshire.

He said that Scotland’s plans for large scale deployment of wind would ‘completely end’ tourism and pristine countryside would ‘forever be destroyed’. He added that work had stopped at his luxury golf development whilst planning permission is being considered for the wind farm near Menie.

After letting rip over the planning application, Trump said he felt betrayed by Scottish ministers who, he claimed, had given assurances that turbines would not be built in the area due to potential interference with radar and shipping lanes.
