YouGen comes out top

YouGen’s founder Cathy Debenham
Renewable energy and energy efficiency website, YouGen, has been named WWF Green Game Changer 2012 at this year’s International Green Awards.

The award, sponsored by WWF-UK, looked for “bold and innovative thinking to inspire others and push forward the urgent transition to a more sustainable future”.

The International Green Awards, which is accredited by the Royal Society of Arts, were presented at a ceremony at Battersea Power Station last week.

“To have our work recognised by such a prestigious international panel of judges is amazing,” said YouGen’s founder, Cathy Debenham. “There are just two of us in the core team at YouGen, but with the help of a great team of expert bloggers from industry, and peer to peer advice, we have managed to build a valuable resource for people who want to make their home or business more energy efficient.

“It was my experience when we renovated our house in 2005 that made me realise that more help was needed if the UK was ever going to make the transition to a low carbon economy. I spend ages researching the options and really struggled to find enough information to make decisions. It’s that experience that led us to focus on the very practical questions people want answers to before they start contacting installers. We also seek out the specialist installers who really care about customer service to be in our directory.

“Winning this award will inspire us to try and reach even more people. It’s so encouraging that the judges think we’re on the right track, and we aim to continue to improve what we offer. With the imminent start of the Green Deal there are going to be many more people who can afford to improve the energy efficiency of their property, and will need a source of advice and to hear about other people’s experiences.”
