The awards recognise excellence in engineering, technology and science across 15 key categories and each is judged by a panel of esteemed industry and academic experts.
Over 70 finalists are now set to join Tim Campbell, former winner of BBC’s hit show, The Apprentice, at a London Awards ceremony on Wednesday, 20 November, where the winners will be announced.
An example of a nominated entry in the Power/Energy category includes the Pelamis Wave Power, Wave Energy Converter Machine. The technology works offshore to harnesses the movement of the ocean’s waves to turn it into clean, green electricity.
Currently at the advanced demonstration stage, the objective of the technology is to become a new commercial source of electricity generation and in doing so provide an important contribution to the worldwide need for safe, secure, clean and renewable energy. Designed and built in the UK, the patented machine is made up of a series of linked tube sections that float on the water surface. Waves pass down the length of the machine and stimulate an up-and-down and side-to-side ‘snaking’ movement.
Other innovations nominated in the Power/Energy category include:
- Selex ES Limited, GridKey Low Voltage Network Monitoring System
- Flowgroup, First Standard-sized, Domestic, Room-sealed, Wall-hung, Affordable microCHP Gas Boiler
- Energy Recovery, PX Pressure Exchanger®: Energy Recovery Devices with Global Solutions
- ABB, Hybrid HVDC Breaker – an Innovation Breakthrough Enabling Reliable HVDC Grids
Barry Brooks CEng FIET FCGI, IET president, said: “These awards are part of the IET’s Inspiring Engineering Excellence Awards Series, which last year provided over £500,000 to celebrate excellence and research in the sector and encourage the next generation of engineers and technicians. All of our awards seek to inspire engineering excellence, right from apprentices and technicians at the start of their careers through to highly established professionals.”
