SolarAid has announced that its social enterprise SolarMoney is now improving the lives of 10 million people living in Africa, having sold close to 1.7 million solar lights.

This level has been achieved following a record breaking year in which 624,468 lights were sold in Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda.

SolarMoney estimates that families in Africa will save over £200m by no longer buying heating oil, and avert over 900,000 tonnes of C02.

SolarAid also estimates that the total number of people benefitting from solar lights in Africa is closer to 50 million, with it accounting for a fifth of all lights sold.

SolarAid CEO, Andrew Webb, said: “A clean, affordable and better source of light is the first and most crucial step on the energy ladder. The benefits to families, schools and communities is truly staggering and the fact that 10 million people in rural Africa, as we speak, are using these lights is testament to the hard work and dedication of our SunnyMoney teams.”
