Caffè Nero UK stores powered by renewables

Caffè Nero, the coffee house, has become the largest business customer of Octopus Energy, powering over 630 of its UK stores with 100% green electricity sourced from wind and solar energy.

The independent, family-owned coffee group is transitioning its UK stores, including those under its other brands Harris+Hoole and Coffee#1, to Octopus Energy’s innovative ‘Electric Match’ tariff. This move will see Caffè Nero’s energy needs met by three British solar and wind farms located in Yorkshire, Wales, and Lincolnshire, managed by Octopus Energy’s generation arm.

The ‘Electric Match’ tariff, enabled by Octopus’s advanced tech platform Kraken, provides real-time, half-hourly updates on energy prices, often below wholesale rates. This allows Caffè Nero to align its energy usage with the most affordable and abundant wind and solar power, potentially reducing its annual electricity bills by up to 17%.

Homegrown power brews up major savings

Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy for Business, commented, “Caffè Nero’s stores have been at the forefront of the coffee market for decades and we are thrilled to be strengthening our existing partnership with them. Through our ‘Electric Match’ tariff, we’re not only supplying Caffè Nero with some of the cheapest and greenest homegrown power, we’re also brewing up major savings for them.”

Will Stratton-Morris, CEO of Caffè Nero UK, added, “I’m delighted we’ve strengthened our strategic partnership with Octopus Energy. The response to the rewards programme we launched earlier this year has been hugely positive and it’s great to be able to work together further to drive an environmental benefit to our customers and teams. I’m excited about where this partnership can lead.”

This enhanced partnership between Caffè Nero and Octopus Energy builds on their joint efforts to promote sustainability. Earlier this year, the two companies launched a rewards scheme offering Octopus Energy customers a complimentary drink at Caffè Nero stores, further cementing their commitment to a sustainable future.
