Ian Rippin, CEO of MCS, shared his insight on the growing momentum of the heat pump market: “The latest MCS data shows that heat pumps continue to be installed in record numbers.
“As of the end of August 2024, average monthly heat pump installations have increased by 39% compared to 2023, which was itself a record-breaking year for the technology.
“Heat pump installations so far in 2024 currently stand at 36,425, meaning we’re 93% of the way to the best year ever for heat pumps.”
Battery storage sees rapid growth
This marks significant progress towards the UK’s decarbonisation targets, as homeowners increasingly adopt renewable technologies for heating.
The steady rise in installations highlights the growing confidence in heat pumps, which are viewed as a key solution for reducing household carbon footprints and energy costs.
Battery storage, another emerging technology, is also seeing unprecedented growth. Rippin continued: “Battery storage is another technology that is seeing a record number of installations.
“There have now been more than 16,000 certified battery storage installations of all-time, with over 11,000 being installed in 2024 alone.”
Solar PV continues steady pace
While solar PV isn’t breaking records this year, the technology continues to be widely adopted. MCS data shows that 13,237 solar PV systems were installed in August 2024, pushing the total for the year to over 108,000 installations.
MCS, which operates the UK’s certification scheme for small-scale renewable installations, tracks all certified installations through its MCS Data Dashboard.
The online tool provides near real-time insights into the uptake of renewable technologies, offering a detailed snapshot of how the UK is progressing towards its renewable energy goals.
