Baxi brings engineering to life in primary classrooms

For the fourth consecutive year, Baxi is partnering with Primary Engineer to bring hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) education to primary schools in the Preston area.

Aiming to spark an early interest in engineering, Baxi engineers will work alongside teachers over the coming months to deliver the Primary Engineer Construction project to students.

The programme began in October with a session where local teachers were introduced to this year’s projects, with guidance from Baxi engineers and the Primary Engineer team.

This year, younger students will build a shoebox tipper truck, while older children will tackle a lighthouse tower complete with an electrical circuit.

Engineering as a real-life career path

Peter Short, quality project lead at Baxi and one of the volunteer engineers, shared his enthusiasm: “The initial session was all about meeting with the teachers, so that together we become comfortable with building these fun but reasonably challenging construction kits.

“Having this time with the teachers at the outset is great as it makes it easier to understand how best we can support “I’ve also been invited to speak at an assembly about myself and my job. Fingers crossed I can answer all the questions!”

Peter added, “For me the goal is help the children understand what an engineer does, the multiple career options open to them in this sector, and the skills that are required to begin a career in engineering. And it goes without saying that my ultimate aim is to inspire them to become engineers!”

Through this collaboration, Baxi aims to show students the possibilities within engineering and encourage them to see it as a rewarding, accessible career path.
