Solar Thermal 2
Scotland’s new Energy Minister has given his first address to the country’s renewable energy industry this week.
The solar industry has pledged to continue to push to keep solar thermal as the Government’s consultation on plans to cut off all support for the technology closed this week.
Manufacturers’ claims about the expected energy efficiency performance of equipment are not fully trusted by their customers. This was a key finding from new research released today by the Carbon Trust, which reveals that just 5 percent of professionals with responsibility for procuring energy consuming equipment for their organisations are very confident in the energy saving claims made by manufacturers, with a quarter (24%) not confident at all.
Treasury chiefs have unveiled proposals to increase the rate of VAT on solar and wind installations to fall in line with European law.
The renewable energy industry has given a mixed response to details of the Government’s Spending Review that included sizeable funding for the Renewable Heat Incentive.

REI: What you got planned for the rest of 2015? PH: The main focus for me for 2015 is to introduce one of our manufacturers’ new products – the Blueberry Smart Hub. It allows the customer to monitor, control and budget what they are spending on their heating and hot water. As a distributor of the Blueberry Smart Hub, we are able to not only provide the consumer with a great product, but it will also help us build a relationship with them by communicating via the hub to make further savings and tweaks.

I am currently immersed in the Energy Related Products (ErP) directive. You may know that from 26 September it becomes mandatory for most heating devices to be ErP compliant and to carry an energy label. This includes air source, water source or ground source heat pumps. Furthermore, where a defined set of components are installed together, then there is a need for a ‘Package Label’ which could include a solar thermal device.
Daikin UK’s new national training centre is equipped with more heat pumps than other, the manufacturer has claimed.

What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
Our priority is to get more funders interested in financing solar PV and renewables technology. We already have a panel of lenders that are very enthusiastic supporters and we have another lender that’s about to participate in the market imminently. We also have a couple of negotiations underway that might result in further finance options for the solar sector, including the provision of second line lending aimed at underwriting consumers who may have failed finance through a primary lender.
